CORD

A font family consisting of three typefaces, including the standard sign composition and alternative character typefaces. Supports Cyrillic and Latin alphabet. Inspired by floral motifs and the accumulation of wires formed on poles or when connecting equipment at music concerts.

stet – on patriarchy and typography

The typographic graphics are excerpts from Katharina Koch’s master’s thesis “stet – on patriarchy and typography”. Part of the work was her own typeface called “unfamiliar”. This typeface aims to irritate the uniform ideal of a (type) family and to question “common form characteristics” of a family. The newspaper “stet”, which was created in addition to the typeface, is a reaction to the rules of typography established by predominantly male designers who want to dictate the way type is used. It stands for the deliberate breaking of rules and the self-confidence not to make corrections, but to develop one’s own position on type setting and design.

YES

“YES”: A vibrant fusion of fun, playground vibes, and bright colours. This experimental-type design embodies the spirit of youthful energy, as every letter springs to life with the charm of a freshly-hatched chick!

Molecular Typography Laboratory

The posters are part of a project in a typographic research called ”Molecular Typography Laboratory.” The Laboratory examines the speculative premise: “The characters of the Hebrew alphabet have a molecular structure.” The research shows how this assertion affects the Hebrew alphabet, word, and language. More than 150 different tests were conducted, which were grouped into nine main topics: Elements; Language; Gender; Formula; Weight; Gravity; 3-D; Generative research; and Play on words and letters.

Skovoroda

The concept of the poster is to reproduce a quote by the famous Ukrainian philosopher and poet Hryhoriy Skovoroda on the occasion of his 300th anniversary, using colored pencils as the primary material for creating the poster. This medium allows conveying the feeling of warmth and spiritual depth expressed in the quote. The main idea of the poster is that everything passes in this world, but love remains forever.

Mriya

The poster is dedicated to Ukrainian original font. The special font named “Mriya” reproduces the Ukrainian sans-serif font in an accident style. The font has soft, round shapes that create a feeling of lightness and freedom. The poster features the word “Mriya” with an embroidered Ukrainian pattern on a background of bright colors, which helps to convey the aura of dreaminess and emotional connection with Ukrainian culture in a modern interpreted perception.

the accidental beauty of digital malfunctions

I felt very inspired by the first “experimental type” issue and decided to make my own experiments surrounding the limits of typography. I started asking myself questions like: What happens when type is on the edge of illegibility? Does almost illegible type allow us to truly appreciate its shape and composition? Then, when my Photoshop crashed and started going crazy, I decided to explore the accidental beauty of digital malfunctions.

Eggcellent

The first impulse for the font »Eggcellent« actually came in the kitchen. I happened to fry the letter “C” in a pan while preparing my breakfast. Typography is somehow in everything. Based on this letter, I then developed the alphabet on the iPad. The approach of using such a fragile base as an egg to create striking messages is fascinating to me. Peace and love, for example, are fragile and must be handled with care, just like a raw egg. On the other hand, an egg can also be a transmitter of a strong message, for example at protests and demos. This contrast forms the tension in my font »Eggcellent«.

Mountain

My works are mostly concerned with western font design and combined with Chinese culture’s spirit. I spent my childhood in a peaceful area in the embrace of mountains and rivers. So it makes me rethink what an ideal living environment for a human being is like. About the experimental typeface Mountain, I deconstructed body symbols and looked for the balance and rhythmic beauty of body symbols images, it looks like Calligraphy font and Chinese painting feeling. Like a combination of m-o-u-n-t-a-i-n to build a new mountain image which is the mountain of the body perception. We can be feeling the metaphorical relationship between types and nature, which can be called Empathy and metaphor.

Taihu Stone Typeface

I started by studying the structure of Chinese Taihu Stone, and designed this set of Taihu fonts, following its obvious external outline and circular structure. I used 5 design elements to design this typeface. The interlacing of fonts and typefaces, as well as the hollowed-out parts of the fonts, are intended to convey the spirit of ethereality. In the book, I use transparent paper to enhance the beauty of Taihu stone overlap. and Like the oriental beauty of Taihu stone placed in the garden. That is a good interpretation of the contrast between types and spaces, and between letters and letters.

MDES

Poster design to promote the School of Art’s new Master of Design program at the University of Arkansas. After a few rounds of more standard design options, the client returned with the request to be more experimental. Ultimately the solution was born out of a series of accidental glitches within the design software that inspired the poster’s aesthetic and was then pushed to the max.

A Pixel Went out in the Night

“A Pixel Went out in the Night” is an interactive art experience that uses experimental typography to evoke emotions related to death. The work draws inspiration from the artist’s personal experiences during the pandemic, including the public’s indifference towards death and the artist’s own sense of helplessness and grief at losing loved ones. The visual component is based on nine Chinese characters that represent death, presented on the screen through a camera. Unrecognizable pixels in each frame are transformed into black dots, symbolizing death’s fleeting nature. The music is structured as narrative chapters, raising thought-provoking questions about death and its cyclical nature.

LACTICIDUP

LACTICIDUP is an innovative display typeface that draws inspiration from the lactic acid buildup that occurs during weightlifting and the spread of viruses during the pandemic. The process of lactic acid buildup can result in muscle soreness and fatigue, akin to the burn felt during an intense workout. The typeface aims to visually represent this uncomfortable experience through the use of cell-like letterforms and nerve-like kerning. LACTICIDUP comprises 26 Latin capital letters as well as some basic punctuation.

Snipers of Bathroom

Snipers of the Bathroom is an illustrative project targeted towards understanding the importance of sitting to pee. Through this project, I would like to shed some light on understanding the popular misconception of the act of standing to pee as a symbol of masculinity. My approach to this issue heads in a humorous direction, with illustrative figures symbolizing strength and with the selection of the blue color, as it has often been rather linked to masculinity. The act of sitting on pissing may seem like a small and insignificant act, but in reality, it represents a larger shift in the way we view masculinity and gender roles.

Bamboo

The type can tell the culture and connotation of this country. Chinese calligraphy Chinese characters convey emotions through the creation of artistic conception with the help of strokes of Chinese characters and rich changes in ink and brush. In this typeface, I want to explore the material relationship between fonts and real objects. For example, A is as robust as a mountain, X is as soft as the Tang Dynasty ceramics, and K is upright and powerful as a Hummer. In the style of the font design, I used basic strokes of Chinese characters to associate the form with bamboo to increase the aesthetics of its oriental font. Fonts are sometimes not only text information but also image information.

Ke____e_p dis_ta__nce, plea_____se!

A part of visual research about ways how visual communications are working in urban landscape and infrastructure. How would we describe with a tool of visual language our experience about contacting with information in public places when our attention is chained to smartphone screens?
So I used smartphone camera to take a photo of sticker on the metro station floor, keeping in mind that I can’t stop to observe it thoroughly because of humans traffic, but have to inform myself about the message. As result I made a poster series about that experience.

Designlanguage and various custom typefaces

„Heute:“ is an offspace gallery in the former shipping center of the Quelle-catalog company. The design is based on two key aspects. The different typefaces and the grid structure that functions as a variable logo.
Deconstructing grid and design guidelines in combination with layering type is the visual language that reflects the temporary and bulky kind of the gallery.

The reuse of colored paper scraps gives the format. Pre-printed and produced on site on a risograph.
