This Way!

This Way! As a type foundry, threedotstype is obsessed with arrows—all their fonts contain additional sets of navigation symbols. This inspired them to go beyond typography and put together broader presentations: type specimen focused on arrows and an exhibition* guide where you can find fascinating stories behind navigation tools that we use every day.

From the specimen introduction: Have you ever thought where the cursor came from? Or why the oldest arrow ever created was showing the way to a brothel? The answers to those questions are part of those publications. The project aims to explain the historical background of arrows and exciting phenomena related to them. Understanding the context of those signs can help clarify the development of human perception. The spectrum of interpretation is broad: the arrow could have been a tool for killing (as in the case of Robin Hood), it could be an indicator of directions or even a symbol of love (Cupid’s attribute). “This way!” initiative will not set a course for your life, but it might explain some of the stories behind arrows which are an active, but often hidden part of our everyday life.

Pandemic Architecture

As the world faces new globalized health threats, there is a need to design the home / the city of tomorrow, living in times whereas pandemics and viruses will be part of our everyday life. Pandemic Architecture International Ideas Competition attempts to open up a dialog and create a think tank, looking for ideas from the architectural and design community about the future of the living, the workspace, the public space, and the tourism industry. There is a strong connection between health and architecture. Since ancient times, health care has been associated with the construction and use of specialized medical buildings and structures. Architecture helps shape the quality of our environments and can contribute to health and wellbeing.

By designing for the needs of a pandemic reality, architects act as guarantors and guardians of the Public Health of a community. Virus outbreaks have their impact on urban space as well as on the living of millions of people.

The Athens based AG Design Agency was invited to design the visual identity for Pandemic Architecture, an International Ideas Competition curated by the Design Ambassador for Archisearch.

Technology and Research in Art and Design

The book Technology and Research in Art and Design reports on the latest research projects at ECAL / University of Art and Design Lausanne dealing with technological issues. It features a synopsis of research projects and a selection of project descriptions, accompanied by conversations on design and artistic research between ECAL professors and scholars in these fields.

The corresponding symposium, on which occasion the book was launched, took place in November 2019. The event included Keynote speeches, conversations, exhibitions and concerts from and with various artists, designers and scholars in these fields from all over the world, in discussion with ECAL faculty members.

ANXIETY ‘TIL INFINITY – THE INITIAL SIX (PT 3)

‘ANXIETY ’TIL INFINITY’ – THE INITIAL SIX’ is a series of 3 artworks acting as a visual essay contextualizing the nuances around the layered states of anxiety. As a type of anti-collage, the works all reference gestures and collateral around anxiety as a subject by bringing together disparate artifacts and visual gestures that create an introspective environment–asserting hints and references that compete for harmony. Artifacts such as the serial numbers and barcodes guiding the compositions are lifted from Xanax packages. Each piece carries the narrative while varying in visual grammar; continuously negotiating the value of time, place, and the internal dialogue overlaying peace with noise.

Treasure

Recently we have seen shift in values.
With a bit of humour, I celebrate change. The Toilet paper roll represent change of values in a short period of time.
Change from “what we want” to “what we need”.
Change towards looking and seeing value in simplicity. There are many layers to it for interpretation.

The paper roll, became an “icon” that everybody came to understand, without long explanatory words.
We also learnt how the preconditioned values in our heads, can just disappear into the air, and made us rethink “which values we want to keep, and which ones we want to adopt moving forward”

Our Time

What makes modern societies tick? Who owns our lifetime? Is efficiency good for luck? What is the rhythm of life? Is the Accelerating economic development dynamics still healthy for us? What are the wishes and desires of modern People in terms of time, money and work? Our Time is concerned with these and countless other questions and tries this in an artistic, philosophical way to process and interpret it visually in a suitable form. Essentially, the work deals with four contradictory aspects of time with the development of modern working environments and social structures accompanied. Using abstract sketches and visual worlds to describe the effects between time and money, between of course and artificially, between outside and internal time, between acceleration and standstill and between efficiency and waste.

The artistic interpretations of the above-mentioned time aspects were shown on 50 time cards and supplemented with philosophical texts. The accompanying artistic texts can be found in a 138-page book.

This project is the master thesis of Visual Communication graduate Michael Ehrenbrandtner at the Art University for Artistic and Industrial Design Linz. He is a creative strategist and multidisciplinary concept maker. His work links different areas of knowledge from the areas of communication and marketing. The core of his work mostly focuses on the brand-identity and its visual positioning.

Online Forward Festival Lectures

While Forward Festival is moving their date for the Vienna event to October 8th and 9th, 2020, there will be Online Forward Festival Lectures on April 17th in partnership with the Dezeen Virtual Design Festival.

For the originally planned festival dates, Forward Festival will partner with the Dezeen Virtual Design Festival which begins on April 15th. There will be selected talks from the Forward archives by Forward speakers including SNASK and Erik Spiekermann brought to your living room. The Forward talks will take place on Friday afternoon, 17th of April, and will be hosted on a specially created section of Dezeen. All talks will of course be free, with no registration or tickets required. More info on the program and running order will be announced via Forward Festival channels soon.

The festival’s motto for this year, „Digital Eyes“ (wordplaying with “digitalize”), which is now more relevant than ever before given the circumstances, will remain the same—together with the festival’s speakers and partners there will be discussions on new ways of working together digitally, overcoming hard times and the state of the “new normal.”

In addition, the application periods for the Forward Exchange Program and the current Moon Exhibition Lockdown Special, an initiative to open the platforms of Forward Festival for struggling creatives and help them out with a small contribution by Forward, will be extended.

Branding, Website Design & Development for CPT

The award-winning digital design studio Moby Digg recently did the Branding, Website Design & Development for CPT – Center for Philosophical Technologies. The CPT is a strategic initiative of Arizona State University and brings together philosophers, designers, artists, scientists, and critical and creative practitioners to interrogate, critique, and reconceive the relation between philosophical inquiry and technological development in the 21st century and beyond. The CPT thinks about technologies broadly, from advancements in AI, biotechnology, and planetary infrastructure design to technologies for storytelling, ecological communication, and community building, in order to envision technical practices that are critically engaged, ecologically embedded, and speculatively framed.

Logo
Reflecting the center’s dynamic DIY approach, the logo builds on the acronym (CPT) whereby letters can be arranged freely within the system and are framed by parentheses. Our research into language and expression of ideas through typography led the conceptual rediscovery of parentheses: They allow writers the freedom to provide additional and clarifying information, inserting relevant thought, always providing context and content.

This variable branding system can be used both statically and animated, adapting to various formats and spacial contexts, but moreover it can easily be typed out and used together with research texts, or claims, creating connected streams of thought.

Identity
The website backgrounds build an analogy to Arizona’s desert landscape, embodying a view to the far horizon. The designers used blur, to emphasize the intersection of disciplines at CPT and the vast information clouds those disciplines are made of. The floating forms show an abstracted version of the constantly moving (philosophical) thinking process.

The resulting compositions of the logo, loose type and bubbles create a brand identity, that should invite free associations in the poetic vastness of philosophy and gestalt.

Website
The developed digital experience works with soft animations, blended layers and gradients. Working with abstract images that almost blend in with the background allows readers to think about new associations between the text, background and images. At the same time, they tried to make the vast amounts of texts as accessible as possible, without losing too much of the website’s usability.

the awareness of touching

These days touching has become a very important thing: we can’t touch the ones we love. We are far from them. We think we might have touch something infected and we get paranoid. Now we have limited access to the things we can touch. Internet (again) has become our best ally. We can’t touch, but we can see.
At first I made this image with vibrants color, to give an image to what I cannot see (the virus) but then, we I change it to b&w it made a new form and sense of touching, instead of seeing.
