NIKE (The Victory of Love)

The NIKE is from the name of goddess of victory in Greek myth. Every single piece represents the spirit of winning. But, how we can declare the victory without love? This poster series conveys the message above. The people could also see the today’s circumstance where the growing brutal nationalism makes people hard to read or aware the meaning of love from the poster.

The continuous experimentation in the field of letterpress printing has led 5X’s formal typographic research onto a new medium, namely, fabric. It’s an entirely unusual print material for a letterpress printing machine. Thus emerges a hand-printed shirt, subsequently sewn to be worn and dressed. Not confining itself to the typical two-dimensionality of paper, here the enlarged, fragmented letters and numbers explode and, following the shape of the body, become abstract images/patterns.

The SVT Club Scarf

Custom lettering for the Berlin-based electronic music label Stil vor Talent (SVT). The experimental typography presents itself like a pattern on the scarf. With dimensions of 155×18 cm and colors in white and black, it is a limited edition that emphasizes the uniqueness and exclusivity of the SVT universe.

Readymag Reinvents Designing Women

Readymag, the design tool for creating outstanding websites without coding, announces the relaunch of Designing Women, an initiative crafted to make a contribution towards combating gender inequality in design. As part of this initiative, the company presents the ReadyLaunch Grant—four fellowships tailored to kickstart design projects and amplify the voices of female-identifying, non-binary, and other individuals affected by gender-related issues in the design industry.

“Rather than sending greeting cards on March 8th, let’s focus on creating environments where women can thrive, grow, and shape the future of the design industry,” notes Diana Kasay, co-founder and CEO of Readymag. “We expect the ReadyLaunch grant to help the project authors pursue their true passion.”

The first edition of Designing Women was launched in 2019. As Diana Kasay noted, the project was about empowering women’s voices in the design industry. “We didn’t have the illusion that releasing the project would immediately change the world, but we clearly felt how its launch affected the design community—we brought to the surface women whose names had been unjustly forgotten and did not receive the attention they deserved.”

As part of the relaunch, Readymag announced the ReadyLaunch Grant to help female-identifying and non-binary designers to put their projects into action. Tailored to kickstart or fully launch design initiatives, the ReadyLaunch Grant supports a wide range of project types, including newsletters, zines, YouTube channels, and podcasts. Grantees can utilize the funds to cover a variety of expenses, such as team payments, space rentals, production costs, project resources, or participation in training programs. Each grant package includes a fellowship valued at $ 2,000, alongside free one-year access to a Female Design Council membership, enrollment in the Female Design Council Mentor Match Program, and assistance in securing media coverage. The application period is open from March 4, 2024, to May 8, 2024.

The Designing Women enlightenment web project showcases 37 profiles, serving as an archive that celebrates remarkable women who have significantly influenced the design industry throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Among the names are Paula Scher, Kazuyo Sejima, Charlotte Perriand, Debbie Millman, Norma Merrick Sklarek, Tea Uglow, and Jessica Walsh.

The focus of the relaunch in 2024 was to make the project more horizontal and inclusive. “Our marketing and design teams are mostly female, and we’ve experienced a lot of the issues the project addresses firsthand,” comments Alya Datii, Head of Marketing at Readymag. “With deep-rooted experience in the design industry, we’re well-acquainted with its challenges and pain points. We sat down and listed all of our problems, experiences, needs, and demands at the intersection of our work and gender. From there, we picked those we could try to tackle as a team. After reaching out to other communities for input, we started the work.”

The project also includes a curated list of over 20 organizations and initiatives tailored for female and non-binary individuals in the design field. These resources are aimed at providing support for networking, securing funding, accessing design training and career opportunities, and showcasing personal work.

Immortal I was

Immortal I Was
An impossible, strange message on an art group T-shirt. Our master was a fictional character, Geriup Gepleki… year after year we paid tribute to his memory at a week-long international painting camp. Could a fictional character be inaudible? We think so, that’s why this message was put on the “official” T-shirt of the camp in 2014! (Unfortunately, the group did not become immortal and disbanded in 2021…)

(re)arrange

Rearranging existing things can create new perspectives and interesting compositions.

For this project, I scanned packaging, tickets and other things that would normally be
thrown away to carve out details that I turned into new designs for posters using overlays
and tools in Photoshop.

I once again chose interesting
sections from the resulting compositions
to design a scarf. This project shows
that new products can be created from
disposable items. All you have to do is (re)arrange.

Merch about you

I’ve decided to create merch for our small team in design studio, but do it in a different way. Everyone fed up with typical corporate items which promotes only the company. I’ve come up with idea to tell the story about each of us with custom phrases which based on feelings, routine, phrases of my teammates. The fonts also telling about character of each member, and the logo of our bureau on the back.

Two Way Tie for Last

Finally, a shirt that you can read! Two Way Tie for Last is a zine in long sleeve tee shirt form. The debut issue—spanning TWO shirts—features a killer essay about Japanese convenience stores, lighting, the Olympics, and design, and a mini-essay about “innovation”. Also includes a recommended listening playlist and heaps of new and old graphics by Ian and Sam printed in fluorescent orange and reflex blue on heavy white Gildan long-sleeve shirts!

I AM THE REASON

This metamorphosis of a recycled second-hand blazer into a two-piece outfit is intended to encourage self-reflection. Its message – to take responsibility for our environment, particularly in relation to wildfires. The text on the back of the top is a reminder – we must be
aware of the impact of our actions; the text on the front of the skirt gives advice on how to reduce wildfires, highlighting methods for improvement. The clothes incorporate burnt areas to draw attention to the theme.

生生不息 생생불식 Saengsaengbulsig

“生生不息 생생불식(Saengsaengbulsig)” means to grow and multiply. In the context of a bilingual environment, we wanted to connect Korean and Chinese in the font structure. In the visual design process of this event, we want to take the font design of Chinese and Korean characters as the starting point. And around the structure of the font to build the entire visual system of the event. The systematization extends to every form of the visual, which corresponds to the concept of “Saengsaengbulsig”.

weholo keyboard scarf

In a design and coding studio, the keyboard is the item our hands are in contact with the most during the course of a working day. It’s the interface through which our work gets done. In order to contribute to this undervalued object, we have created the weholo keyboard scarf. Keyboard on one side, circuit diagram and lettering on the other. It comes in two colorways and is available via instagram pm.

KTF Metro

The new typeface KTF Metro by Kyiv Type Foundry portray Ukraine’s Soviet Heritage and current war.

Yevgen Anfalov and Oles Gergun, the founders of Kyiv Type Foundry, held a workshop to pay tribute to the importance of the Kyiv Metro, resulting in the creation of the exciting new family release called KTF Metro inspired by it. The Kyiv Type Foundry specializes in crafting Cyrillic (and Latin) fonts, drawing inspiration from typography originating from Ukraine’s Soviet era.

Echoing WWII events, in 2022 Kyiv Metro became the bomb shelter for thousands of its inhabitants. This sad fact is another big milestone in its rich history, which continues to be written. Built six decades ago, it carries 1.32 million passengers a day (2016) and is one of the most beautiful manmade creations in Ukraine. As part of station architecture, the letters of the Kyiv Metro tell us a lot about its history. It’s a book. You can read it in many directions. Exiting on each station, you’ll notice different letterings. “Look at them, analyze and make fonts on their basis”, the workshop leaders told to their students in the summer 2023 workshop called “Kyiv Metro Fonts.” So they worked on it for a week and the editors of Kyiv Type Foundry took and carefully finished five most representative of them. The result is a family release called KTF Metro, aiming to preserve the typographic memory of the city. Additionally, the workshop leaders interviewed Oleg Totsky, a metro historian and specialist. His answers open up the context in which the Kyiv Metro letters emerged and supplement the showcased typefaces respectively.

Show your support for Ukrainian and Cyrillic type design! The typeface is entirely free of charge for Ukrainians—but as Ukraine is still in a state of emergency, the creators of the typeface and the Kyiv Type Foundry would like to ask you for a donation. Use their PayPal (paypal.com/paypalme/kyivtypefoundry), and they’ll distribute the money among those in a need and report by the end of 2024.
