The TDC62 call for entries campaign and the Type Directors Club annual design, Typography 37, is designed by OCD | The Original Champions of Design. The annual will be available in bookstores in December 2016.

We were once told : “Out of thousands of typefaces, all we need are a few basic ones, and trash the rest.” That was Massimo Vignelli in 1991. Thousands are now millions and the quality has markedly improved. Picking just five is impossible. Every designer has their own arcane process for selecting a font. Reliable typographers. Preferred foundries. Old reference books. New “best of” lists. Competition winners. For me, TDC is the arbitrar of great type. As a competition, it’s the World Championship of Lettering, so that’s how we designed it.

The winning entries will be exhibited in eight traveling shows beginning in summer 2016 in New York City. In addition to touring the United States and Canada, the exhibitions will also tour in cities worldwide, including Seoul, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Taipei, London, and cities throughout Spain, France, Germany, Japan, Poland, and Russia. The winners will also appear at the 2016 ATypI conference in Warsaw, Poland.

The Type Directors Club is a non-profit professional organization that has been dedicated to educating its international membership and graphic arts community about type, type design and its myriad uses in the field of communication since 1946.
