The dgv Font Label is proud to present Feixen, the latest font design by Martin Aleith from Germany’s Pfadfinderei, a design collective that doubles as one of the world’s most popular group of VJs. The Feixen font may seem familiar to you for those who are familiar with Ellen Alien and Apparat’s “Orchestra of Bubbles” album cover. Feixen was originally designed to illustrate the striking cover but now it is available for all who want to bring some feixen [fai:ksn],"to chuckle" in German, and sophistication into their lettering life.

Can you give us a brief description about you and the company you work for?
Design collective Pfadfinderei (in English, “pathfinders” or “home of the scouts”) formed in 1998 and creates visual marketing tools as well handles the realization of events. We offer a full range of design services answering to functional design demands and provide advanced multimedia art. Pfadfinderei is now structured into three main divisions: Corporate Design, Production and Installation.

How would you characterize your design style?
I think I’m a natural drawer by birth. And since I spend a lot of time drawing, I think I just have a good sense and know how things should look. This is probably what gives my graphic design the expression that it has.

Can you give us a short description about your font?
Every character follows a simple but strict geometrical grid giving Feixen an unusual shape and cheerful expression. The font features the extensive use of parallel angles and all the letters have the same X-height, which allows the mixing of capital and lowercase letters as well as ligatures. And the result... is just another font.

What is the ideal usage of your font?
Feixen is so skinny, you can even slip it under your door.

Why did you design this font and what was your inspiration?
I designed the the cover of Ellen Alien and Apparat's first collaboration CD, "Orchestra of Bubbles" (Bpitchcontrol) and wanted to create a visual identity that had a strong and bold typographical image. So, I designed Feixen.

Where does the name come from?
In German, Feixen [Fai:ksn] means "to chuckle". Many strange German verbs serve as a good source of inspiration when looking for the right name. Naming a title out of a verb rescues it from its grammatical imprisonment.
