Slanted Magazine #9 – Stencil
»Stencil« erinnert uns an die großformatigen Bilder von Christopher Wool, an Architekturpläne von Le Corbusier, an Banksy, dessen Arbeiten im öffentlichen Raum durch die Pop- bzw. Punk-Kultur der 70er Jahre und durch Blek le Rat geprägt sind, oder an die Schablonen-Beschriftungen auf Transportkisten oder Militärfahrzeugen. Mit Sprüh-Schablonen bzw. Pochoirs verbinden wir aber auch eine Fülle neuer Anwendungen und Fonts. Diese können ganz traditionell konzipiert sein oder so grenzüberschreitend wie etwa die "Beans" von Dieter Zembsch/Charles Grant (Lineto) in unserer letzten Ausgabe.
Im Slanted Magazin #9 wollen wir das Thema »Stencil« aufnehmen und laden ab sofort zur Teilnahme ein. Einerseits interessieren uns neue Fonts und Schablonen-Schriften, andererseits Applikationen in Industrie, öffentlichem Raum, Kunst, Textil etc. Wir suchen Arbeiten von Studierenden und Professionellen, die selbst etwas Eigenes/Interessantes zur Thematik vorschlagen möchten, etwas kennen, über etwas schreiben möchten ... Diese können auch aus nicht-typografischen Bereichen stammen – wir sind stets daran interessiert, auch andere Bereiche der Gestaltung einzubeziehen.
Zusätzlich stellen wir in der Rubrik Studienarbeiten/Typostories interessante Studienprojekte und Diplomarbeiten vor, die nicht notwendigerweise zum Thema passen müssen – Einreichungen willkommen!
Bitte sendet eure Vorschläge in Form von visuellem Material (bitte als Ansichts-pdf) und einer kurzen Beschreibung bis einschließlich Sonntag, 28. Juni 2009 an magazine(at)slanted.de. Nach Einsendeschluss wird das Material von uns gesichtet – ihr werdet dann schnellstmöglich von uns per Email benachrichtigt.

The word "Stencil" brings to mind the large format images of Christopher Wool, Le Corbusier's architectural drawings, Bansky's 70's pop and punk-themed public works, Blek le Rat, and of course institutional applications like shipping containers and the machines of war. With spray-stencils and pochoirs we are able address a broad dynamic of applications and type faces. These applications can be designed traditionally, or they can be boundless expressions like "Beans" by Dieter Zembsch/Charles Grant (Lineto), which we featured in our last issue.
In Slanted Magazine #9 we would like to address the topic of stencil applications and invite you to contribute. We're looking for new fonts, including stencil-fonts, as well as stencil applications in industry, the public realm, art, textile manufacturing, and so on. We are looking for projects (and essays) from students and professionals interested in stenciling and its possible applications. These projects do not necessarily have to be (typo-)graphic. If you would like to suggest other aspects of design, feel free.
Please submit your work in PDF format via email along with a short description to magazine(at)slanted.de. The submission deadline is 12AM Monday, the 28th of June 2009. We will inform you via email after we've had a chance to assess your work if we plan to use it.
